IIUM Inter-School Debating Championship 2005

Monday, April 11th, 2005

Actually it has been 2 days since the closing of IIUM Inter-School Debating Championship 2005. For me, this one is the worst by a simple reason – I am the head-committee for special task, which renders me losing all the joyfulness of being a tabs & adjudication sub-committee. Another thing is because someone stole my camera..(wondering if this tournament requires electronic equipment sacrifice each year coz last year someone stole my phone..damn it!)Throughout the tournament, I am accompanied with extreme tense and pressure which I manage to tolerate and smile.. a fake one though… Thanks to Daud, giving me an opportunity to judge the debate in the preliminary round, double-octo and octo finals.. if not, I won’t be able to watch the debate. This tournament taught me so many things, reveals to me lots of stuff… I learned a lot actually. Despite the fact that tense reigned, somehow I enjoyed what I saw. In this championship, I saw many types of people. Some winning-is-everything teachers did make us pissed and they are no more than a pain in the ass. Jumping to the ceiling when their students won, got mad like a cow when their students lost, and starting to argue the integrity and dignity of the judges… and I was like “when your team performed like f***, they deserved f*** - as simple as that. And its true, being a teacher doesn’t really mean that you understand all the simple formulas. However, some teachers doesn’t really play their supportive role. Left the children here and then ran away. But what I can say, the students have the same things in common – they came here to learn and to improve themselves. Malaysia should be proud of having these nations. But this tournament really taught me how to work a little bit professionally and also to be particular or somehow perfectionist. All I can say is that I hope to be given the same opportunity next year… and debating has been a passion of mine even though I am no good like other debaters in UIA.
